Sweet Potato Helps Regulate Blood Sugar – Nutritionist

Do you eat sweet potatoes? An Abuja based Nutritionist; Mrs. Simisola Adebola claimed that the consumption of sweet potato helps improve blood sugar regulation, most especially in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Mrs. Adebola said the natural sugar in sweet potato is steadily released into the blood stream thus helping to ensure a balanced and regular source of energy without spiking up the sugar level.

She further added that that the soluble fibre in sweet potatoes such as pectin may increase satiety, decrease food intakes and also reduce blood sugar spikes by slowing down the digestion of sugars and starches.

“Sweet potatoes are packed with several minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin B6 Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, iron, fibre, and Vitamin D among others,” says Adebola.

The expert noted that sweet potato is enriched with Vitamin B6 which aids reduction of the chemical homocysteine in the body. The chemical is known for causing cancers.

She also mentioned that consumption of sweet potatoes helps ward of cancer cells and protects against the effects of ageing due to its rich contents in beta carotene.

“Eating sweet potatoes decreases fasting blood glucose and LDL – cholesterol levels and increases insulin sensitivity.

“Consuming sweet potatoes helps in controlling the activities of the kidneys, production of red and white blood cell, metabolizes protein, and helps resist stress.

“It also helps in curtailing the risks of blood clotting. Sweet Potato is considered a good food because it does not contain toxins.”

However, the nutritionist warned that sweet potato should be consumed excessively, because it contains high level of oxalates, which can increase the risk of kidney stones formation.

Stay safe and healthy.
