5 Health Benefits of Fasting in Ramadan

Since we are in the Holy month of Ramadan, let’s look at the health benefits of fasting in Ramadan.

Fasting is defined as the process of restricting food and drink intake, either by one’s personal decision or by force, for a particular period of time. It could be done partially for some certain kind of food or in total in which no food or liquid is consumed for 24 hours or a few days.

If you are of the opinion that you may not be able to withstand fasting, then you need to give up coffee or sweets. Below are five health benefits of fasting:

1. Detoxification: This is a usual body activity where the body neutralises any type of toxins in the various organs like the colon, liver, lungs, or skin. During fasting, the body depends on the fat deposits for energy, which releases chemicals from the fatty reserves and effects the removal of these chemicals through these organs.

2. Mental Health Improvement: After fasting, the blood is filled with increased levels of endorphins, which makes you more alert and leave you with a superb feeling of good mental health.

3. The risk of Obesity Reduction: Fasting is employed to help fight obesity for a long period. It activates the liver enzymes and breaks down fat and cholesterol into essential bile acids, stimulates metabolism and converts surplus fat into heat.

Medically, fasting has proved to be the simplest way to push out excess fat with an acceptable amount of minimum risks to one's health.

4. Gives the Digestive System a Break:  During fasting, the digestive organs relax, giving the digestive system a much-needed rest. After fasting, both digestion and elimination are invigorated.

5. Lowers Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Fasting has also proved to reduce insulin resistance, helping with insulin sensitivity, allowing the body to tolerate carbohydrate better than usual times, which leads to the reduction in blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
